Viking Family: With the recent tragic events across the country involving students being struck by vehicles while loading onto a bus it is important for us to remember safety rules regarding school buses. More school aged pedestrians have died during the hour before and after school than any other time of day, according to NHTSA. And, although drivers are required by law to stop for a school bus when it's loading or unloading passengers, they often don't. Kansas Law KSA 8-1556 requires all motorists to stop when approaching or overtaking a stopped school bus displaying its flashing red lights and stop arm. Motorists are to remain stopped until the bus is no longer displaying is flashing red lights and stop arm. Violation of this law not only endangers children but is punishable by a fine and court costs in excess of $420. Tips for a Safe Ride for Students School buses are the safest way for students to travel, but children also need to do their part to stay alert and aware of their surroundings to prevent injury. NSC urges parents to teach their children the following safety rules for getting on and off the bus, and for exercising good behavior while riding. Getting on the Bus: ● When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness ● Do not stray onto the street, alleys or private property ● Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches ● Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before approaching the bus ● Use the handrail when boarding Behavior on the Bus: ● Don't speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract the driver ● Stay in your seat ● Don't put your head, arms or hands out the window ● Keep aisles clear of books and bags ● Get your belongings together before reaching your stop ● Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat Getting Off the Bus: ● Use the handrail when exiting ● If you have to cross in front of the bus, first walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver ● Make sure the driver can see you ● Wait for a signal from the driver before crossing ● When the driver signals, look left, right, then left again. Walk across the road and keep an eye out for sudden traffic changes ● If your vision is blocked, move to an area where you can see other drivers and they can see you ● Do not cross the center line of the road until the driver signals it is safe ● Stay away from the rear wheels of the bus at all times Thank you!

We have kids age 4-18 and adults from 19--70 coming out to be a part of the event. All proceeds go back to the Maisie DeVore community pool. The pool is open all summer, free of charge to anyone. This is made possible through events such as this and the big Gravel Ride for Maisie's Pride. If you would like to sign up, please contact Kelly Hoelting @ khoeling@mv330.org or 866-557-6686.

We would like to invite everyone to the 2nd grades Wax Museum, tomorrow, May 2 from 1:30-3:00, in the old gym. Dear Parents of HS Athletes,
Mission Valley High School partners with Cotton O’Neil Orthopedics & Sports Medicine to provide athletic training services for our school.
This year, Cotton O’Neil Orthopedics & Sports Medicine of Topeka is offering a high school ‘Sports Physical Day’ from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018. This event is open only to students entering grades 9 through 12 in the 2018-2019 school year, who attend a school where Cotton O’Neil provides the athletic training services.
There is no appointment needed, and the cost of the physical is $20. Cotton O’Neil will be donating half of that cost back to us to use for athletic training services.
Students who participate in this ‘Sports Physical Day’ will be seen by board-certified sports medicine physicians. Should a student need a referral for a cardiology check, the Cotton O’Neil pediatric cardiologist will be on site as well.
This is a great opportunity to check something off your to-do list before the next school year, and this physical will be good for all of next school year.
If you have additional questions, please call the Michael Ramirez with Cotton O’Neil Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at (785) 354-5910, or Rod Hasenbank at 866-557-6686.

Here are our Super Viking's for the week of April 16-20. Congratulations!

The 2016-2017 Elementary Yearbooks were in and are already out of stock due to the high demand. This years yearbook is "bigger and better" and we want to make sure everyone that would like to order one has the chance. If you are interested in ordering a copy please reserve a copy with the Elementary Office. Delivery is set for April 26-May 2. They are $12.00.

Mission Valley Parents & Families,
On Friday, April 20th another National Student Walkout Day has been planned. From around the country, plans indicate that the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue through the end of the school day. We understand that the purpose of the school walkout is to remember the innocent victims of school violence and to raise the awareness of school safety.
As a school district, we are not encouraging or discouraging students to participate. It is possible that some students at Mission Valley may want to participate in this nationwide event. USD 330 encourages parents and their children to have discussions about this event and believes the decision to participate in the April 20th walkout should be left to individual families.
On April 20, parents must contact the school administrative office in advance to excuse their student. All classes and school-related activities will continue on their normal schedule. USD 330 will not provide a designated, supervised area for students to gather at on school property. If students walkout of class at 10:00 a.m. they will need to follow normal school process to check-out, exit the building, and leave school property.
Again, advance notification from parents is required for students to be excused from classes missed. School attendance and absence policies will be followed. Information about attendance and absences can be located in the Student Handbook which can be found on the district website and mobile app.
Thank you for your continued support of USD 330 Mission Valley. We are looking forward to having a GREAT and PRODUCTIVE final weeks of the 2017-2018 school year.
Go VIKINGS!!!

If you select Menu from the top right of the screen, it will pop up with various pages. Underneath each of these pages is a drop down menu. If you are looking for PowerSchool, you will find it under Parent/Student Resources for either JH/HS or the elementary. Our plan is to have a quick link at the bottom of the front page to make that easier to find. Please be patient with us as we make these changes.

Congratulations to the JH BB teams with their performance at the Flint Hills Junior League Tournament. The girls not only finished as the regular season league champions at 15-1, but the FHL Tournament Champions as well (beat CG 37-34 in the Championship). This is the first time that the girls have ever accomplished this feat, so congratulations to the girls and coaches!
The boys team made great improvement down the stretch as they lost a heart breaker in the last seconds of the semi-finals to #1 seed and undefeated Council Grove (the boys had lost to them in late December by more than 25 points), and then after leading the majority of the 3rd-4th place game the boys got beat at the buzzer by a 3 pt. shot as they finished their season 4th in the league.

Students should wear a heavy coat to school as well. Dressing properly not only will prepare them for waiting on the bus or being prepared if the vehicle they are riding in were to break down on the way to school, but also, they are prepared in the event we would have to evacuate school due to a fire or other event.

Parent(s) & Patron(s):
As you know we are in that time of the year when the possibility of school cancellations, early dismissals, or have a late start increase due to adverse winter conditions. The decision to modify the school day due to weather is always carefully examined before the final decision is made. School district officials directly check and monitor roadway conditions, they contact local agencies {KDOT, Wabaunsee County Transportation Department, local law enforcement agencies, etc...} for road condition reports. Information is also considered from local weather reports and communication with other local districts.
USD 330 Mission Valley is approximately 375 square miles with land and roads in four counties. Due to the large area that the district covers the road and weather conditions can vary across the district at any one time. Roads may be treacherous in one area of the district and safe in other areas, however, the determination for school closure is based off of the area that is impacted the most. USD 330 recognizes the fact that cancelling/delaying the start/dismissing early can create challenges for parents who need to find care for their child(ren), however, the safety of students will come first.
If a final decision cannot be made the night before then it is our goal to have a decision made in the mornings between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. If adverse weather occurs during the school day and school needs to be dismissed early we will send out a notification at least 1 hour before dismissal. It is important to make sure that your child's contact information is updated so that we have the most recent information.
If it is decided to cancel school we will immediately send an automated call through School Messenger. Information will also be sent to local television and radio stations, as well as, USD 330 district website and social media. Information will be sent to be broadcasted on the following: {TV Stations---Channels 13, 27 & 49} {Radio Stations: 580 WIBW-AM, 104.9 FM, 94.5 Country, and Country Legends 106.9}.
ALL SCHOOL ACTIVITIES will be cancelled or postponed when school is closed for dangerous road conditions, except for unique situations authorized through the district office.
Have a great day and stay warm!!!!
